A wrong-way driver was killed on Interstate 80 over the weekend after crashing head-on into a semi, the Wyoming Highway Patrol says.

Crash Details

The crash happened around 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, at milepost 4.3, near Evanston.

According to a fatality crash summary, 40-year-old Utah resident Duane Derrick was driving a Chevrolet pickup eastbound in the westbound passing lane while a Volvo commercial vehicle was westbound in the passing lane.

“Both vehicles reacted and swerved to the north shoulder, colliding head-on,” the summary reads.

Sadly, Derrick, who was wearing his seat belt, didn’t survive his injuries. The trucker was not injured in the crash.

The summary does not list any possible contributing factors.

Fatal Crash Statistics

Derrick is the first reported person to die on I-80 in Wyoming this year and the seventh reported person to die on Wyoming’s highways this year.
