Letter: When will our members of Congress stand up for the rule of law?

The primary duty of our elected congressional members is to uphold the United States Constitution. I commend Sen. Murkowski for at least attempting to question the president’s most recent actions regarding Greenland and Venezuela. It is inconceivable and unacceptable that our other federal officials — and so many in Congress — remain silent as Donald Trump:

• Invades Venezuela without congressional approval (or even advance knowledge).

• Seizes complete control over Venezuela, its leader and its oil supply.

• Threatens to forcibly take Greenland, a partner for decades and a NATO ally — not an asset to be acquired.

• Allows for ICE to harass, arrest and even kill unarmed individuals with impunity.

• Targets what he deems to be “blue” states with multiple forms of retribution, from budget cuts to ICE raids and deploying National Guard troops.

• Castigates and threatens congressional leaders who question his decisions.

• Eliminates federal workers who present truthful information he doesn’t like (whether labor statistics or climate change data).

• Gilds his office with gold trim and builds a ballroom to fill with donors while millions of Americans lose health care and cannot pay their heating bills.

• Enriches himself and his family by myriad practices comprising major conflicts of interest — along with many more egregious, self-serving actions that have eroded the moral authority of this nation and, even worse, significantly weakened the foundations of American democracy.

When will Alaska’s other senator and our only representative stand up for the rule of law?

— Margaret Douglas Williams, Anchorage
