After reading your Tuesday article regarding fines pertaining to the irrigation of nonfunctional grass at residences and commercial businesses, I have to recommend that the Las Vegas Valley Water District and Southern Nevada Water Authority take a look at their own municipal water waste.
Parks and sports fields should be their top priority. Walk through one, and the average person can find a vast multitude of water waste. Aside from the blatant irrigation system leaks, there are drip irrigation systems that water nothing. What they intended to water has died or been removed, and no follow up to correct this waste has been taken.
Sports fields and their irrigation and maintenance is a continuous, year-round expense. Twenty-five percent of MLB baseball fields are synthetic. If this county is serious about the preposterous reductions in water usage that were recently relayed, then these areas should be placed at the top of the priority lists.
Sadly, residence and business owners are being treated to a “do as I say, not as I do” mindset of government officials who apparently have not spent any time out personally observing where the low-handing fruit exists.
