LETTER: Restoring trust in the process | Letters

I was struck by the comment from the mayor of Las Vegas asking whether the city is “missing anything” that could encourage people to exercise “the most sacred right of being an American citizen” (July 12 Review-Journal). The sentiment sounds noble but ignores how much the meaning of voting has changed.

For many of us growing up, voting truly felt sacred. It carried weight and responsibility. It was a rite of passage into adulthood. It was private. And it was something you could lose if you broke the law — a reminder that civic participation had standards attached to it.

Today, that sense of seriousness has eroded. Instead of strengthening the integrity of voting, our political leaders seem intent on weakening it. Proposals to eliminate voter ID requirements, implement mass‑mail ballots without adequate verification, and maintain bloated voter rolls all contribute to a system that feels increasingly careless. Even a recent letter to this paper estimated that indiscriminate ballot mailing in Nevada alone wastes millions of taxpayer dollars.

When voting becomes treated as a casual act rather than a solemn civic duty, it loses value. If our leaders truly want to encourage participation, they should start by restoring trust in the process — not by lowering the standards that once made voting meaningful.
