Letter: Open primaries safeguard against the tyranny of the minority

I would like to add my voice to those of the authors of recent letters opposing the ballot measure seeking to repeal Alaska’s election system of open primaries and ranked choice voting.

As a voter unaffiliated with any political party, I stand with the overwhelming majority of Alaskans who are similarly registered. We comprise 64.7% of all voters. Republicans who are pushing the initiative constitute 23.42%.

The objective of this measure is to institute tyranny of the minority in Alaska by stripping the vast majority of voters of the right to choose who we wish to support in our general elections and handing that power to rabid party members whose sole interest is advancing extreme partisan agendas without regard for the good of all Alaskans. As we are presently seeing nationwide, this approach is driving America into failed state status.

Please join me in voting no on this ruinous initiative.

— David A. James, Fairbanks
