Legislature discusses West Virginia farm tax law

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WOWK) — The Joint Standing Committee on Government Organization met in the House Chamber Sunday to discuss the possible inconsistency of state tax law.

They spoke with members of the West Virginia Farm Bureau and the West Virginia State Tax Office on specific issues, including how farms are evaluated, the presence of foreign-owned farms, mineral rights and agri-tourism.

West Virginia Farm Bureau President Charles Wilfong said, “the excess levees that, you know, a lot of the counties have, it increases that tax burden even more, and I think that’s something that we need to take a serious look at as well because, you know, why should farmers have to pay, you know, quite a bit greater amount of taxes per person than the other individual that has their kids in school?”

Many came up to the podium to discuss taxing issues and their opinions of why they are in favor for changing some of the tax rules for West Virginia farmers.
