Maui police say a man died a day after a two-vehicle collision on Honoapiilani Highway over the weekend.

Police identified him as Thomas Lindsey, 59, of Lahaina.

The collision occurred at about 6 p.m. on Saturday on the highway near the Kualapa Loop overpass in Lahaina.

Based on a preliminary investigation, Lindsey was driving a 2005 Nissan Altima southbound on Honoapiilani when he rear-ended a 2023 Kia Soul. He then veered left into oncoming traffic, and the car rolled onto its passenger side, blocking northbound lanes of travel.

Lindsey was found unconscious before being assisted out of the vehicle, police said.

He was wearing his seat belt, and the Nissan’s front airbags had deployed. He claimed no injuries at the time, but was treated for a visible injury to his leg before refusing further medical treatment.

The driver of the Kia, an 82-year-old woman, and her passenger, an 83-year-old man, reported no injuries. Both were from New York, and reported they were wearing their seat belts.

Medics responded to Lindsey’s home at about 3:20 a.m. Sunday due to injuries believed to have been sustained in the collision. He died later that day at 3:30 p.m. at Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Police said speed is a factor in this collision, but the involvement of drugs or alcohol has not yet been determined. The investigation is ongoing.

This is Maui County’s first traffic fatality of 2026, compared to four the same time last year.
