BROWNSVILLE – The Rafferty’s/Double Dogs Caveland Classic didn’t start the way the Edmonson County girls’ basketball team hoped it would.
After dropping a two-point decision to Meade County on the first day, the host team bounced back in a big way with a 63-51 win over Glasgow on Tuesday at Edmonson County High School. The Lady Cats got huge nights from Shelby Sowders and Cariann Williams and held off a fourth-quarter rally to bounce back with a win.
“(Monday) night was tough,” Edmonson County coach Jody Booth said. “Losing in the first round of the tournament you are hosting, you really find out about your team — if they are going to be really committed or they are going to feel sorry for themselves. I feel like we bounced back, did a really good job of responding from the loss. It was a team effort. Everybody played well.”
Edmonson County (6-4) used a 6-0 spurt to surge in front 12-7 late in the first quarter. The lead grew to 16-10 after one, before Glasgow (3-7) opened the second quarter with an 11-2 run — regaining the advantage 21-18 on a 3-pointer from Reece England with 5:21 left in the half.
Sowders helped the Lady Cats regain control with a personal 11-0 run that made the score 29-21. Sowders scored Edmonson County’s final 13 points of the half, with the Lady Cats in front 31-23 at the break.
“My teammates really helped me out,” Sowders said. “They did their job to get open or get away from the ball and let me kind of create too.”
Edmonson County was able to extend the lead to 45-31 after, three with the margin growing to 16 points early in the fourth. Glasgow made one final surge, pulling within 50-44 but was unable to get any closer.
“All the games we’ve lost, when we go back and watch them, we kind of beat ourselves in the fourth quarter,” Sowders said. “His message was not to give up, to finish the game off. Finally get one where we finish the whole game.”
Sowders led the way for Edmonson with 25 points. Williams finished with 22 points, 18 rebounds and 14 blocks to record her third triple-double in the last five games.
“I always give credit to my teammates,” Williams said. “It’s 5-on-5. It’s never 5-on-1, so definitely credit to my teammates for getting me the ball, letting me get in the paint and block some shots.”
Sowders led Glasgow with 22 points, while Kayla Kirkpatrick added 11 points.

Braden Wright finished with 25 points as Edmonson County got off to a fast start and held off a late surge to make it four straight wins.
“They are ranked ahead of us in the region, so we thought this an important game to prove a point,” Wright said. “We just came out guns blazing and ready to play.”
Edmonson County (6-3) never trailed, scoring the first six points and extending its lead to 20-5 by the end of the first. The Wildcats hit six 3s in the first half to keep Breckinridge County at bay, with the score 46-28 at halftime.
The margin grew to 26 points midway through the third when Breckinridge County (5-8) tried to mount a comeback. Breckinridge County kept chipping away with a 29-point fourth quarter, getting as close as nine in the final minutes before Edmonson County was able to close it out.
“We got a little complacent there after we got the big lead,” Edmonson County coach Brad Meredith said. “We started doing some silly things. Some of the fundamental stuff we worked on kind of went out the window because we thought it was over. I told them it’s never over against a good team like Breckinridge.
Nine Wildcats scored in the win, with Blayne Deweese (14 points) and Owen Ruth (11 points) joining Wright in double figures.
Ryan Nottingham led Breckinridge County with 23 points, while Benjamin Grimes added 22 points.
