Klobuchar, Smith Speak on Senate Floor Ahead of DHS Funding Vote

The Minnesota senators urged the Trump administration to withdraw ICE agents from the state and their colleagues to not pass any budget proposals until that measure is taken.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KVRR) – Discussion continues in Washington over the future of Operation Metro Surge in the state of Minnesota.

The U.S. Senate convened today, and both senators from Minnesota took the floor to urge the Trump administration to withdraw agents from the Twin Cities.

Both Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith decried the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti and said that continued ICE presence was making it impossible for normal Minnesotans to live their everyday lives.

“Of course it’s good that Bovino was removed. Other people have to be removed, too – Kristi Noem shouldn’t be in her job anymore – but mostly we need these ICE agents out of Minnesota,” said Klobuchar.

“This is not just Minneapolis and St. Paul, where so many of the TV cameras have been,” added Smith. “It is Rochester, Minnesota, where the schools have reported a huge fall-off of kids going to school, because they’re so afraid.”

This debate is particularly important in the Senate, as the Department of Homeland Security is one agency that would lose funding on Friday if a new budget is not passed.
