Kittens rescued from Raleigh house fire are at Wake County Animal Center; babies are too young for adoption now

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — More than a dozen kittens who were rescued from a Raleigh house fire Saturday night are now at the Wake County Animal Center, officials said Sunday.

The baby cats were found by firefighters when crews responded to an active house fire at 722 Method Road around 7:15 p.m. Saturday, according to the Raleigh Fire Department.

Firefighters discovered 14 kittens and rushed them out of the burning home.

No one was home at the time of the blaze, which caused significant damage to the house after starting outside on an attached garage, fire officials said.

Five people who live in the home were displaced because of the fire, Raleigh Fire Battalion Chief Ben Averette said.

The kittens were initially cared for at the scene by firefighters who were seen holding and petting the very small cats, who were put on towels and blankets outside the fire.

The Wake County Animal Center took in the kittens on Saturday night, according to Cindy Lynch, rescue coordinator for the Wake County Animal Center.

Lynch said the kittens are being evaluated by animal center veterinarians are being cared for by staffers.

The kittens are very small and young in age, and because of that, they are not yet available for adoption, she said.

Some kittens will be put in foster care until they are old enough to be adopted.

The Wake County Animal Shelter website shows a large influx of 5-week-old kittens that were brought into the shelter on Saturday and Sunday.

The shelter will be closed on Monday because of Memorial Day.
