LSU coach Lane Kiffin didn’t look pleased on Saturday after officials ruled that Kentucky quarterback Kenny Minchey scored a 1-yard touchdown as the second quarter clock expired.
The score, a tush-push run up the middle, gave the Wildcats a 21-17 halftime lead.
It initially looked like the Tigers’ defense may have stopped Minchey short of the goal line, but a pair of Kentucky players kept pushing the senior starter through the pile, which allowed him to eventually climb into the end zone. Officials then reviewed the play and upheld the call they made on the field.
LSU’s radio broadcast then asked Kiffin what he thought of the call, and he suggested that Minchey should’ve been ruled short. But the Tigers’ first-year coach also said that his defense could’ve played a better first half.
“We’ve got to tackle better,” he said, “and do a better job on the perimeter.”
In the first half, LSU ran 17 more plays than Kentucky and possessed the ball for 10 more minutes. It also outgained the Wildcats by 65 yards.
But a couple big plays allowed Kentucky to take the lead. Its first rush of the game went for 77 yards and set up a 3-yard score. Then its special teams unit chipped in a 55-yard punt return touchdown.
