Missouri communities are continuing to wrestle with how to handle large-scale data center projects as concerns about infrastructure, utilities and local control collide with promises of major economic investment.
Gov. Mike Kehoe said data centers can bring once-in-a-generation opportunities for communities but stressed that local leaders should have the final say on whether projects move forward.
“The investments that some of these companies can make are generational,” Kehoe said. “They’re likely dollar amounts that those communities will never ever see or have an opportunity yet again. But it’s got to be right for the community.”
Kehoe’s comments come as several Missouri counties, including St. Charles, Webster and Jackson, have enacted temporary moratoriums on new data center projects while officials study potential impacts on infrastructure, utilities and public health.
The governor also acknowledged growing interest among lawmakers in establishing statewide standards for data center development. He said legislators are expected to file proposals next year aimed at creating guardrails while still allowing economic growth.
National Taxpayers Union President Pete Sepp said policymakers should focus on creating consistent tax policies for data centers rather than imposing restrictions or higher taxes. He argued data centers are expected to play a major role in powering the nation’s economy for decades.
The debate over data centers is expected to continue as local governments, developers and state officials work to balance economic development opportunities with community concerns.
