WASHINGTON (WOWK) – After a buzzing run in the nation’s capital, Charvitha Sanjaya, 14, of Kanawha County, has been eliminated from the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Sanjaya was knocked out by a spelling and grammar test Wednesday in the third round of preliminaries.
The eighth grader from John Adams Middle School has been competing in spelling bees since she was in fourth grade, and this week, she’s been in Washington, D.C., for the 100th Scripps National Spelling Bee.
She said that although her time in the competition is wrapped, she does not need the infamous crying couch; she’s still excited about competing in the spelling bee.
“I’ve learned well from the experience and I’ve enjoyed it,” Sanjaya said. “I’m happy that I’ve just experienced this.”
Sanjaya also gave a shoutout to her support system, saying that she knew they would cheer her on to the end and beyond.
“I’m very thankful for my family, my teachers and Charleston Gazette-Mail for bringing me out here and supporting me,” she said. “I’m really happy that they gave me the opportunity and were confident in me, no matter how the outcome was.”
Although she has finished eighth grade and her spelling career, her teachers and administrators tell me that her future is bright as she moves forward.
The other West Virginia representative, Nirav Nimbarte, was eliminated in the sixth round.
The Scripps Bee will wrap up in the nation’s capital on Thursday.
