LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Juneteenth celebrations are taking place around the valley, including at Fergusons Downtown retail plaza, where one can shop, eat, and explore.
Among the shops is Tofu Tees. The shop’s founder, 16-year-old Kumei Norwood, is behind the Juneteenth Freedom Day Fest, which takes place Thursday evening.
Norwood, who started Tofu Tees at 8 years old, opened her store when she was 12, and is a local success story. Her mission is to inspire change through art, fashion, and activism. That’s why she’s organized the Juneteenth Freedom Day Fest for the past three years.
Tonight’s free, family-friendly event runs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and features live performances, local vendors, and family activities. Norwood has created a space to celebrate freedom, unity, and culture.
Norwood designed most of the shirts and stickers in her shop. She also proudly spotlights her friends in the store, including one who makes plushies sold alongside her signature merchandise.
Her shop was featured this week in the new season of “Somebody Feed Phil” on Netflix. Norwood said since the episode aired, she’s seen a boost in online sales.
In a desire to inspire the next generation of young creators, she hosts summer camps. She proves that age is just a number as he uses her platform to spread her message of unity, empowerment, and self-expression one T-shirt at a time.
