June Iris Adams
South Haven, MI – June Iris Adams, a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and the last of her generation, died in a hospital in South Haven, Mich., on May 30. She died just a month shy of her 90th birthday, fittingly June 29.
Mrs. Adams was a proud native of Charleston, S.C., and grew up in the tiny Rosemont neighborhood. She was the youngest child of Robert A. and Josephine (Garner) Jordan. She was predeceased by her siblings Mary Warren, Robert A. (Buddy) Jordan Jr. and Louise J. Bailey.
She met her husband, Fred Adams, in Charleston shortly after World War II and moved with him to his hometown of Portage, Mich., as a teenager. Fred’s mother, Ora Adams, took in the newly wed couple and became a second mother to June.
June Adams followed her mother-in-law and husband into the insurance business, working as an agent for Aflac for many years. She was also a dedicated Red Cross volunteer, traveling to help communities after devastating hurricanes. She visited her beloved hometown of Charleston frequently.
After years in Portage, Mrs. Adams moved to her mother-in-law’s South Haven cottage on Lake Michigan 40 years ago. The cottage became a center of life for her many friends and family. She loved playing cards with those friends and loved her garden, which was filled with colorful hydrangeas and impatiens in the summer. Her friends and family knew her backyard as the best seat in town for South Haven’s annual July 4th fireworks show over the lake.
Of her three children, she is survived by her son Michael Adams of Portage. Two other sons, John and Mark Adams, predeceased their mother, as did her husband. Her loving niece Beverly Toner also predeceased her.
She is also survived by her grandchildren, Joanna Mosley and her husband, Magnus; David Sullivan and Lisa Adams. Her great grandchildren are Mackenzie Cannady and Kingston and Kerrington Mosley. And daughter-in-law Oneida Honshell.
Among family members who also loved her are Steve Bailey and his wife, Beatrice Bernier and their children Jordan Bailey, Ariel Bernier and Mona Lee Bernier Bailey. Valerie Johnson and her children, Matthew Hoffman and Jefferson and Brooke Johnson; and Cliff Toner and his partner Regina Rainwater.
Her friends and family will gather at 1 p.m., June 29, to celebrate her 90th birthday at her cottage in South Haven. All are invited to come remember and tell stories about this extraordinary woman. –
We invite you to share a memory and sign our guest book.
