J.J. Watt addresses brother T.J.’s contract situation with Steelers

J.J. Watt will not outright address his brother, T.J.’s, contract status with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but he has given plenty of subtle shots between the lines to reveal what happened there.

In March, Watt said that teams should do deals earlier if they want hometown discounts, and now that T.J. is heading into the last year of his deal, he will want a bigger figure.

“The earlier you get the deal done, the better deal you get. That’s just a fact,” Watt said on the Pat McAfee Show in March “That’s why, my personal belief, they should have done it last year because I think there was a hometown discount to be had last year. But now the longer you wait this year, you’ve got Micah [Parsons] coming up. Like you said, you got Aidan Hutchinson, you got Myles [Garrett]. These guys are getting new deals. That number’s gonna inch closer to four in front of than threes. So you’re gonna want to get that done earlier rather than later because the price isn’t going down.”

T.J. is not at OTAs to start, though it is unclear whether that is contract-related. J.J. has too much information on the subject and would not address it directly, but reiterated his comments from March that teams should get these guys signed earlier, pointing to the Trey Hendrickson situation.

“I have a lot of information on that subject,” J.J. said when asked about T.J.’s contract. “That’s not my subject to discuss.”

Myles Garrett’s $40 million per year already sets a high bar for the Pittsburgh Steelers to meet when it comes to the next extension for Watt. Detroit Lions star Aidan Hutchinson could top that number, driving the asking price for Watt’s annual gross average and potentially guaranteed money up even more.

The 30-year-old edge rusher remains one of the NFL’s elites. At the annual league meetings in March, general manager Omar Khan said the team hopes to see Watt finish his career with the Steelers.

“I’m not going to get into the contract numbers, but if you’re referring to T.J. [Watt], I assume, I’ll just say that I’m very hopeful that T.J. will finish his career as a Steeler,” Khan said.

He had just 11.5 sacks this past year and dealt with multiple injuries throughout the season. Following the season, Watt noted he wanted to stay with the Steelers, but contract negotiations can sometimes be slightly hairy.
