INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Attendance at the 2026 Indiana State Fair dropped to its lowest level in a decade as severe weather forced officials to close gates and order sheltering five times during the 15-day run.

Fair officials announced Tuesday in a news release that 800,461 people visited this year. The fair ran 15 days from Aug. 7 to 23, with the facility shut down on Mondays.

Based on past attendance data, the 2026 fair saw a decrease of more than 6% compared to the 2025 attendance of 854,977. This year’s total also marked the lowest attendance since 2016, when 731,543 people attended a 17-day fair. The fair changed to the 15-day format in 2024. The fair’s largest attendance was in 2013, with 978,296 attending over 17 days.

Historic storms across the state created ongoing challenges “well beyond the fairgrounds,” the release said. The 2026 fair had five temporary closures of the gates, with people already at the facility being asked to shelter from the weather. Afternoon thunderstorms were so severe that the fair never reopened Aug. 12 at the fairgrounds.

Despite the rain, the fair celebrated two attendance wins. The final Sunday, Aug. 23, set the second-highest final-day attendance in 17 years. Additionally, a show by contemporary Christian singer-songwriter Josiah Queen on Aug. 9 broke the record for the largest crowd at the Free Stage, with an estimated 9,000 concertgoers.

Also announced Tuesday was a yearslong agreement with the Indianapolis Indians minor league baseball team to install a permanent Wiffle ball field at the fairgrounds. The move follows the popularity of a temporary field during this year’s fair, the release said.

The 2027 fair, with Monday closures again, will run from Aug. 6 to 22.
