Huntington restaurant doing their part to fight hunger

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WOWK) — One local business in Huntington is using their platform to fight food insecurity, something the owners are no stranger to.

Jewel City Seafood is lending a plate to their community with their new family value meal.

The deal begins on Nov. 1 and includes a full meal for families who need it. It includes an entrée, sides and drink for adults while offering kid’s menu options for children.

Owner Dickie Anderson is a retired Huntington firefighter who knows his neighbors well and said he and his wife just want to help fill the gap.

“I know there’s a need in the Huntington area. I’ve seen enough of it over a lifetime of what I did in my job,” Anderson said. “The reason we’re doing this is my wife and I were on assistance. They called it food stamps back then, but it would be benefit program, and both my children were raised on WIC.”

Two tables in the restaurant are now dedicated to that deal, and Anderson said they do plan to keep it an option until assistance is restored.

In order to keep the family value meal available, he said the offer is limited and will only be served to families.
