INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A Huntington eighth grader is representing Indiana at the 2026 NBA Math Hoops Global Championship, the Pacers Foundation announced on Thursday.
The nonprofit arm of Pacers Sports & Entertainment says it picked Ananiel Thamsanqa for his standout season in the NBA Math Hoops program. He was also recognized for his efforts during an Indiana Fever game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Executive Director Erin Bess says the foundation is proud of Ananiel’s dedication.
“We’re proud to see him represent the Indiana Pacers and Indiana Fever on a global stage and inspire students across our state through the power of STEM and sport,” Bess said.
It was NBA Math Hoops inaugural year at the Boys & Girls Club of Huntington County, where Ananiel is a member. He earned All-Star Student status, completed at least 25 games and finished 10 lessons during the season. The club won the program’s Regionals in March.
NBA Math Hoops was created and developed by Philadelphia-based educational nonprofit Learn Fresh. It’s designed to help build math skills using a basketball-themed board game, with a curriculum built around it.
Boys & Girls Club of Huntington County CEO Ashley Allen says she’s excited for Ananiel to represent Indiana and the club.
“Opportunities like NBA Math Hoops show young people that academics, critical thinking and teamwork can open doors to incredible experiences,” Allen said. “We are excited to see Ananiel represent our Club on a global stage.”
Ananiel’s coach, Alan Smith, was also recognized as the NBA Math Hoops Outstanding Education for the 2026 Season.
The NBA Math Hoops Global Championships will be held in New York City from June 22-25.
