If your water bill suddenly doubles or triples, you might assume the utility company made a mistake. There could be a much simpler explanation, and it could be costing you hundreds of dollars.
Kimberly Palmer with NerdWallet recently had a water bill that topped $1,000 for three months, compared with her normal bill of about half that amount. She called the utility, had her meter checked, and eventually discovered a leaking toilet. A $300 plumbing repair could potentially save her about $1,200 over the course of a year.
