INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Central Indiana has been included in a slight risk of severe storms, a 2 ranking with 5 as the highest, for Thursday, Feb. 19, for the first time in 2026.
The Storm Prediction Center made changes to its storm outlooks in October 2014. Since then, the organization releases their outlooks for severe thunderstorms on a scale of 1 to 5. A “high” (5/5) risk is the worst with widespread severe storms expected. For a “slight” (2/5) risk, scattered severe storms are possible.
Even though it is still winter, severe weather can happen in February. Central Indiana has had a slight (2/5) risk of severe storms on 11 different days in the month of February since 2015.
Slight risks are not that rare in general, with 21 different days last year under that risk in our area.
