INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — An Indianapolis man was found dead Sunday just days after a heavy fire broke out in his southeast side home.
The Indianapolis Fire Department says the fire broke out at the Temperance Avenue home just south of Southeastern Avenue around after 2 p.m. Thursday.
Upon arrival, IFD found “heavy fire and smoke” coming from the garage, which they extinguished within 10 minutes.
Firefighters located the homeowner, 55-year-old David Gray, standing in the backyard. Gray, only slightly injured, refused treatment by medics at the scene. IFD says he spoke “extensively” with fire investigators to discuss possible causes of the fire.
Despite seeming “alert and oriented” when speaking with IFD, Gray was found dead sometime Sunday.
Investigators did not say if he died as a result of the fire. The Marion County Coroner’s Office was expected to perform an autopsy to confirm Gray’s cause of death.
The fire was still being investigated as of Monday.
