Hi-Liners Sweep Wahpeton to Maintain Region 1 Lead

The Valley City Hi-Liners picked up another sweep in Region 1 play Tuesday, defeating the Wahpeton Huskies 25-12, 25-22, 25-22 to remain atop the standings with just four region matches remaining.

Wahpeton came out strong in the opening set, building an early 7-4 lead while searching for its first region victory of the season. Valley City quickly responded with a 7-1 run to seize control. Kinslee Glandt and Jaye Potratz provided a spark on the outside, while Wahpeton’s serving struggles helped the Hi-Liners continue to build their advantage. A Kierstin Klabo kill capped the set and gave Valley City a convincing 25-12 win.

The second set proved much tighter as Wahpeton improved its serving and Valley City struggled with several attacks into the net. The Hi-Liners appeared to take control with a 7-0 stretch that built an 18-11 lead, but a sloppy finish allowed the Huskies to rally with an 11-5 run and pull within one at 23-22.

A service error by Wahpeton senior Cambri Mauch gave Valley City the ball back, and Morgan Larson followed with an ace to seal the 25-22 set victory.

The third set remained close throughout the early and middle stages, with Valley City holding a narrow two- to three-point advantage before Wahpeton rallied to tie the score at 16-16.

The Hi-Liners responded with a decisive 7-1 run, fueled by kills from Klabo and Nora Pederson and an ace from Brynn Lueck.

Wahpeton mounted one final push, cutting the deficit to 24-22 with the serve, but Katie Burchill’s tip shot forced a flurry of hurried touches from the Huskies. None cleared the net, giving Valley City another 25-22 win and completing the sweep.

The Hi-Liners will have a week off before traveling to face the Northern Cass Jaguars on Oct. 20. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The match can be heard on 1490 AM/96.3 FM KOVC and online at NewsDakota.com.
