Heat claims 260 lives in Clark County as of mid-September

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Clark County Coroner’s office reported Monday that there were 260 heat-related deaths so far in 2025.

The report is not final, as 90% of cases take up to 90 days to investigate the cause and manner of death. The latest report only includes cases where the identification is confirmed and the next of kin is notified, according to Clark County.

The first death was on May 9, and the most recent death noted was on Sept. 15. Those who died ranged from 18 to 91 years old.

The county also added that certain drug classifications make people more susceptible to succumbing to the heat, including the use of certain drugs, including fentanyl.

In addition to the use of drugs, other contributing factors in heat deaths can include illnesses and medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease, as well as behaviors such as physical exertion, inappropriate clothing, lack of acclimatization, and poor fluid intake.

Heat was a factor in the deaths of 527 people in 2024, according to the county.
