CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Guardians have added another depth arm to the 40-man roster.
They claimed left-hander Matt Krook on waivers from the A’s on Thursday. Krook was added to the 40-man roster and optioned to Triple-A Columbus .
The Guardians moved Ben Lively (right elbow) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL to make room on the 40-man for Krook. Dr. Keith Meister is expected to perform season-ending surgery on Lively next week in Arlington, Texas.
The Giants drafted Krook in the fourth round in 2016. He has pitched only eight games in the big leagues including four with the Yankees in 2023, one with the Orioles in 2024 and three with the A’s this year.
The A’s designated him for assignment on Tuesday.
In eight big-league games, Krook has no record, but he does have a 16.20 ERA (15 earned runs in 8 1/3 innings). He’s struck out eight, walked eight and allowed 14 hits.
In three games with the A’s this year, he posted a 5.40 ERA (two earned runs in 3 1/3 innings).
Krook was better at Class AAA Las Vegas. He went 3-1 with a 3.21 ERA and one save. He struck out 21, walked eight and allowed 14 hits in 14 innings.
Until 2023, Krook was a starter for the majority of his games. The 6-4, 225-pound lefty has pitched exclusively out of the bullpen for the last two plus years.
