VALLEY CITY, N.D. — Oakes Post 36 had no answer for Grafton’s Tony Villareal, who turned in a dominant two-way performance to lead the Spoilers to a 10-0 win Friday in the opening round of the Valley City Mid-Summer Classic.
Villareal struck out six over five shutout innings and allowed just one hit. At the plate, he drove in the game’s first run with an RBI triple in the opening frame.
The turning point came in the bottom of the second inning when Oakes struggled to close out the frame. Grafton scored six two-out runs, blowing the game open with a 7-0 lead. From there, the Spoilers coasted, eventually sealing the win via 10-run rule after five innings.
Oakes will look to bounce back Saturday at 10 a.m. when they face Jamestown, who was no-hit in its first game against Hillsboro/Central Valley. That game will air live on 1220 AM / 100.3 FM / 95.9 FM KDDR.
