PLAINFIELD, Vt. (WCAX) – The efforts of a former Goddard College graduate could keep the school’s legacy of student-directed, experiential learning alive.
Goddard College in Plainfield may have closed for good last year, but the school’s campus is brimming with new life, including classes on leadership, comics, and even the history of “Star Trek.”
“We’re still really honoring the kind of unique things that people could do at Goddard, the way that it allowed for the exploration of topics that weren’t possible elsewhere,” said Adam Myers, who was part of the group pushing to revive elements of the college after its closure.
“Not just the values of Goddard but that kind of deeply transformative environment that so deeply fostered, you know, curiosity and passion in people,” Myers said.
He got in touch with the campus’s new owners, a New Hampshire-based property management company. They got on board with his idea for the organizer behind The Goddard Spark, an effort to create something that sustains the college’s spirit. “A spark that we all shared as part of the community. That spark made Goddard what it was. It was a sense of shared passion, and purpose, and community,” Myers said.
And it’s not just for the college community. Anyone can participate when the program launches in November. Six instructors will teach classes on a variety of topics.
“One of the things that was the most important part of what made Goddard Goddard was that it was student-first education, it met the student’s needs, and I have no intention of leaving that in the past,” Myers said.
Myers says after launch weekend, he’ll take feedback from visitors to expand on these programs and keep them running.
