Girls high school basketball has started and with two weeks of the season already in the rearview mirror, let’s take a look at some of what happened in last week’s games around the state.

Sanford’s Defense powers Warriors to 2-0 start

The Warriors are undefeated two games into the year with dominant performances on both ends of the court. Through their first two games, the Warriors have scored 158 points and only allowed their opponents to score 29. Sanford played its first two games of the season back-to-back last Thursday and Friday defeating St. Andrew’s and Tower Hill. Tower Hill was the 14th seed in last year’s state tournament in which Sanford made a run to the semifinals. The Warriors are scheduled to play DMA this Friday followed by a game against Union Catholic High School in New Jersey on Sunday.

Spartans Win Three to Begin the Season

St. Mark’s won its first two games of the season at the AI duPont Tip-Off Tournament defeating AI duPont High School in its first game and Tatnall in the second. The Spartans only had one matchup last week, defeating Conrad in a close game. The Spartans have received key contributions from sophomore Natalie VanDzura and senior Madiella Keefer. Keefer led the Spartans in scoring in two of their three games and VanDzura scored a season high 27 points in the team’s first game. St. Mark’s has two games scheduled this week. Monday night the Spartans will play Odessa at home and on Friday St. Mark’s will travel to Appoquinimink for a road game against the Jaguars.

Delaware Military Academy Starts New Season with Undefeated Start

DMA is 3-0 this season after finishing last season in the quarterfinals of the state tournament. The Seahawks entered this season without their top two scorers from a year ago, but haven’t missed a beat, defeating Christiana High School last week to stay undefeated on the new season. Four Seahawk players scored double digit points in the win and combined for 18 steals on the defensive end of the court. DMA is scheduled to play Concord High School on Wednesday and Sanford on Friday.

Cape Henlopen Begins Season with Undefeated Week

The Vikings officially started their season last week with a road victory over Smyrna High School on Tuesday and then followed that with a pair of victories over the weekend against Sussex Central and Haverford High School in Pennsylvania. The Vikings returned eight players from their tournament run a year ago where they lost in the second round to Sanford. Senior Amalia Fruchtman is one of the eight returning players and leads the Vikings in scoring through their first three games of the season. Fruchtman has scored double digit points in each game thus far. Cape Henlopen will play two games this week starting with a matchup against Dover High School on Monday and a game against Stephen Decatur High School from Maryland on Thursday.
