Ghoul Morning: Slimy Yet Satisfying at Boo at the Zoo

FARGO — They’re the things that go bump, croak, slither and skitter in the night.

And you can get up close and personal with some of the most unsettling denizens of the Red River Zoo at “Boo at the Zoo” this month.

It’s also one of the area’s largest trick-or-treating events.

This year’s “Boo at the Zoo” includes a new sensory area, “Blue Boo at the Zoo,” which makes it easier for people to have the zoo experience without triggering their sensory sensitivities.

The event includes animal encounters with some of the zoo’s less-cuddly species, like the hissing cockroaches, and an albino tiger salamander named Sausage — a species you can find in the wild right here in North Dakota.

Sausage, his hissing cockroach friends, and Zoo Director Sally Mulvena and keeper Paige Tetzloff joined the Morning Show to talk about why salamanders are a critical indicator species when it comes to spotting environmental pollution in our region, how hissing cockroaches do, in fact, have personalities, and all the other things you can learn at Boo at the Zoo.
