An inmate at the Garland County jail has been charged with felony battery for a reported attack on his cellmate earlier this month where the victim will reportedly require reconstructive surgery for his injuries.
A charge of second-degree battery, punishable by up to six years in prison, was filed direct to Garland County Circuit Court on Friday against Latrell Quandarries Jackson, 24, who has been in custody at the jail since June 6, 2025, for assaulting his pregnant girlfriend.
Jackson had pleaded no contest on Feb. 20 of this year to a felony charge of third-degree domestic battery for the attack on his girlfriend and was sentenced to five years in prison, but he had not been transferred yet.
According to court records, Jackson was previously convicted on July 28, 2021, of three counts of residential burglary and sentenced to five years’ probation, so he was charged Friday as an habitual offender. His probation on the burglary charges was revoked, and he was sentenced to five years in prison to run concurrent with the domestic battery sentence.
According to the probable cause affidavit on the new charge, on July 3, Garland County Sheriff’s Deputy Sergio Rodriguez was working his assigned post in Housing Unit Echo at the jail. Shortly before 5:30 a.m., after completing breakfast service, Rodriguez heard a disturbance coming from one of the cells.
Based on the sounds he heard, Rodriguez believed a fight was occurring between two inmates, so he immediately ordered all inmates within the housing unit to lock down and requested additional deputies via radio.
Upon the arrival of responding staff, deputies approached the cell and reportedly observed two inmates “actively engaged in a physical altercation.” Both inmates were visibly covered in blood. Deputies entered the cell, separated the inmates and placed both of them in hand restraints without further incident.
The inmates were then escorted from the housing unit for medical evaluation while the incident was investigated. The inmates were identified as Jackson and Arius Raekwon Adams, 23, who were both assigned to that cell.
Both inmates were transported to the medical unit for evaluation and treatment and after being examined, Jackson was medically cleared and returned to his cell.
Adams reportedly sustained a “complex laceration to his nose, resulting in the loss of a portion of the nasal tissue.” Due to the severity of the injury, he was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Medical personnel determined the injury would require “reconstructive nasal surgery” to repair the damage and “restore the missing tissue.”
Adams was in custody at the time having been arrested Feb. 12 on a felony charge of violation of a no contact order, subsequent offense. He later pleaded guilty to the charge on July 21 and was sentenced to six years’ probation, fined $1,500 and was ordered to pay $440 in court costs and to complete mental health treatment.
Jackson was initially charged on July 14 with a felony count of first-degree battery, punishable by up to 20 years in prison, for the reported attack on Adams, but the charge was later amended to second-degree battery and filed on Friday.
