CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Guardians open a three-game series against the Houston Astros today, June 6, in a matchup of perennial contenders at Progressive Field. The Guardians (33-28, third in the AL Central) enter the game after dropping two of three to the Yankees in the Bronx. The Astros (34-28, first in the AL West) come to Cleveland having won seven of their last 10 games, including two out of three earlier this week against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.
Friday’s matchup is the first meeting of 2025. The Astros won the season series last year, 4-1.

Cleveland returns to Progressive Field after a brief three-game road trip in need of some of that home cooking. The Guardians, who are 17-11 at home, were held to just six runs in their series in New York. Cleveland hitters are batting just .231 in their last 10 games. The team is near the bottom in the AL in slugging percentage and hits.
Guardians pitchers own a respectable 3.99 ERA. Their bullpen is one of the best in the league with a 78% save percentage and only five blown saves.

José Ramírez: The six-time All-Star third baseman is doing it all for the Guards, leading the team in batting average (.330), home runs (11), RBI (29), on-base percentage (.384) and hits (74).
Carlos Santana: Now in his third stint with the ballclub, the 16-year vet is batting .378 in his last 10 games and shares the team lead with Ramirez in RBI.
Emmanuel Clase: The Guardians closer has rebounded after a shaky start, posting a 1.14 ERA with nine saves and no blown saves since April 21 .
A look at the Astros
Houston hits the road with just a 12-16 record away from Minute Maid Park. The team could be a little groggy after traveling to Cleveland following a weather-delayed game in Pittsburgh that ended at 12:26 a.m. Friday. The Astros won behind Isaac Paredes’ two home runs and a breakout game for Jacob Melton. The left fielder, ranked by MLB Pipeline as Houston’s No. 2 prospect, went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base in just his fourth game of his MLB career.
On the season, the Astros hitters rank in the top five in the AL in batting average (.255), while the pitching staff leads the league in strikeouts (592 in 545 1/3 innings) and holds opponents to a .219 average, tied for second in the AL.

Jeremy Pena: Shortstop is hitting .425 (17 for 40) with three home runs and six RBIs over the past 10 games. He leads the team in batting average (.318), on-base percentage (.378) and hits (75).
Jose Altuve: Now in his 15th season with the Astros, the former MVP is tied for second on the team with nine home runs, while hitting .264

Astros Colton Gordon (0-1, 5.95 ERA) vs. Guardians Logan Allen (3-3, 4.22 ERA)
In this battle of left-handers, Houston turns to Gordon. The rookie has struggled in the first four starts of his MLB career, giving up 24 hits, 13 earned runs and four homers while opponents are hitting .289 against him in 19 2/3 innings. His control has been pretty solid, with 20 strikeouts against just three walks.
Cleveland counters with Allen, who made his first relief appearance on May 31 after failing to reach the fifth inning in his previous two starts. While Allen tossed a scoreless frame with two strikeouts, he has been consistently inconsistent this season. Now in his third year, he has battled command issues, allowing 53 hits and 25 walks while striking out only 38 in 49 innings.
