COLUMBUS, Ind. (WISH) — A Columbus woman was in custody on felony arson charges Friday after two fires in Bartholomew County overnight caused an estimated $145,000 in property damage.

About 9:30 p.m. Thursday, the Columbus Police Department and Columbus Fire Department responded to a home in the 1300 block of 10th Street for a house fire. When officers arrived, they found a burning truck and flames coming from a house window. Officers used a fire extinguisher to contain the truck fire before firefighters arrived to extinguish both blazes.

Investigators said they smelled gasoline and believe the fire was intentionally set. No one was in the home at the time.

While detectives and fire inspectors processed the scene, a second house fire was reported in the 5400 block of South Jonesville Road at about 11:45 p.m.

Investigators linked the two incidents because the owner of the 10th Street home had previously owned the Jonesville Road property.

While police searched for a suspect, 35-year-old Ashley Perez called dispatch about 5:30 a.m. Friday. Officers located her at a downtown restaurant and took her into custody.

Perez was arrested on two preliminary counts of arson, a mid-level felony.

Inspectors estimated damage to the 10th Street home at $20,000 and the Jonesville Road home at $125,000.
