Former LSU big Matt Gilhool is transferring to Kansas State, he announced on social media Tuesday.
The 6-foot-11, 213-pound freshman didn’t appear in a game this season and was the second freshman on new coach Will Wade’s team to enter the transfer portal.
Gilhool committed to LSU under former coach Matt McMahon in September of 2024. The lefty was the No. 109-ranked player and the No. 15 center in the country in 2025, according to 247Sports. He picked the Tigers overs offers from Mississippi State, Georgia, Iowa, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Virginia Tech and Miami.
Kansas State finished last season 12-20 and second-to-last in the Big 12 with a 3-15 conference record. Gilhool will play for first-year coach Casey Alexander, who was previously at Belmont.
Gilhool, a Philadelphia native, announced his entry to the transfer portal on April 1 and is the fourth player so far from LSU to pick a new landing spot.
Gilhool is one of eight players from last year’s team to transfer, joining Dedan Thomas, Mike Nwoko, Jalen Reed, Robert Miller, Ron Zipper, Mazi Mosley and Marcus Vaughns.
Thomas will play next season at Houston after he averaged 15.3 points and a team-leading 6.5 assists for LSU. He had season-ending foot surgery in February and was the first player to have the intention to enter the transfer portal on March 25.
Nwoko, the 6-foot-10, 261-pound starting center, is transferring to Xavier. The junior played one year at LSU, averaging 13.4 points on 61% shooting overall and 5.9 rebounds in 21.8 minutes per game. Reed was expected to be LSU’s second-best player before suffering a season-ending left Achilles tendon injury in the sixth game of this season.
Miller averaged 6.1 points on 65.7% field-goal percentage, 3.9 rebounds and 1.4 blocks.
Zipper, a 23-year-old guard from Israel, appeared in only nine games in his one season with the Tigers. He played a total of 33 minutes. Mosley, a freshman, played 19 games and averaged 1.8 points in 6.4 minutes. Vaughns didn’t appear in any game action during his freshman season after early enrolling in December 2025.
LSU has not added any new players since the transfer portal window opened on April 7. The lone player from last year’s team who remains and hasn’t entered the transfer portal is freshman point guard Jalen Reece.
The Tigers ended last season 15-17 overall and 3-15 in the SEC.
