CLEVELAND, Ohio — Former Cleveland police officer Alexander Sinclair will spend between 10 and 12 years in prison after firing a gun outside a Painesville elementary school last year, prompting a lockdown.

Lake County Common Pleas Judge Vincent Culotta sentenced Sinclair, 35, of Madison Township, on Wednesday involving the Oct. 31 incident at Riverview Elementary School.

On the day of the shooting, Sinclair had been arguing with the mother of their child at a daycare. She left to drop off a child at Riverview Elementary. Sinclair followed her to the school’s parking lot and rammed her car before firing a shot through her windshield.

The school resource officer, Alan Ward, intervened, and Sinclair was accused of trying to steal Ward’s gun before being arrested.

Sinclair was off-duty at the time, and the Glock 26 he fired at the woman was not his service weapon, Cleveland police said.

In April, Sinclair pleaded guilty to kidnapping, abduction, endangering children, assault, inducing panic and obstructing official business. He resigned from the department, where he had worked since 2015. It was his only Ohio law enforcement job, state records show.

This was not the first time Sinclair faced allegations of wrongdoing while employed by Cleveland Division of Police. He was suspended last year for having sex on duty, Cleveland police said previously

Sinclair’s attorney declined to comment.
