Former Auburn All-American makes his NBA debut

Rookie Johni Broome did not play in the Philadelphia 76ers’ first five games this season and had been assigned by the NBA team to its NBA G League affiliate on Wednesday.

But on Sunday, the former Auburn All-American was still with the Sixers, and Broome had four points, two rebounds and one assist in his NBA debut.

Broome entered Philadelphia’s 129-105 victory over the Brooklyn Nets with 4:43 left to play and stayed on the court until the final buzzer.

Broome tipped in a missed shot with 2:55 to play for his first NBA basket. The next time down the court, Broome made a layup for his second bucket.

Broome was a second-round pick in the NBA Draft on June 27.

The 76ers assigned Johni Broome to the Delaware Blue Coats on Wednesday. The NBA Gatorade League affiliate of Philadelphia, the Blue Coats opened training camp on Tuesday as they work toward their season-opening game on Saturday against the Westchester Knicks.

Sunday’s victory lifted the 76ers’ record to 5-1. Philadelphia plays the Chicago Bulls at 7 p.m. CST Tuesday at the United Center in Chicago.

During the 2024-25 college basketball season, Broome’s accolades included consensus first-team All-American, the SEC Player of the Year Award, the SEC Tournament Most Valuable Player Award, The Sporting News National Player of the Year Award, the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award and the Pete Newell Big Man of the Year Award as he helped Auburn reach the Final Four of the NCAA tournament.

In his final season at Auburn, Broome averaged 18.6 points, 10.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.1 blocked shots in 36 games. He led the SEC in rebounds and blocked shots. His 389 rebounds set a school single-season record, and Broome left the Tigers ranked second in rebounds, third in blocked shots and eighth in points in Auburn history.
