INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Rain continues into Wednesday as flooding concerns persist across central and southern Indiana.
Soggy start to our Wednesday.
Flood Watch remains in effect until 2 PM this afternoon across south-central Indiana. The cold front that brought this week’s showers and thunderstorms is slowly moving south through the region. Combined with an upper-level wave riding along the front, showers and a few thunderstorms will continue over the southern half of the state.
While there won’t be any severe weather with storms that develop this morning, the potential remains for heavy rain — and with it, flooding concerns over already saturated areas.
Rain tapers off
Rain chances will drop off quickly after the mid to late afternoon hours as the front clears the state. We’ll be left with mostly cloudy skies and cooler temperatures, with highs only in the mid to upper 60s.
Briefly dry Thursday
Thursday will bring the most pleasant day of the week as high pressure settles in. Temperatures will be cool but very comfortable, with highs near 70°. Expect a good mix of sun and clouds through the day.
Unsettled pattern for the busy weekend
We see strong agreement among the models that an upper-level wave will move into the Midwest this weekend. This will bring warm, more humid air back into the region and likely produce widespread rain and thunderstorms on Friday. It may be a close call for the final practice before the Indianapolis 500, as rain chances look to move in during the early to mid-afternoon and stick around through the evening and overnight hours.
Rain chances will likely continue into Saturday, especially during the first half of the day.
Rain chances remain in the forecast for both race day and Memorial Day, but without a well-organized system in place, only isolated chances are expected as of now. Many of the storm chances will be fueled by afternoon heating, so we’re hoping the rain holds off until at least near the end of the race — and ideally after the checkered flag waves.
Meanwhile, temperatures are going to be quite warm, reaching the upper 70s for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, and likely staying mild as we head back to work next week.
