ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The final weekend of the New Mexico State Fair includes a first-ever student film showcase, three more PRCA rodeos and concerts as crowds track ahead of last year.
The first New Mexico State Fair student film showcase will happen Saturday at the Whataburger Farm on the north end of Main Street.
Event managers said they plan to screen around 15 short films made by students at the University of New Mexico (UNM) and New Mexico State University (NMSU).
“The other thing that we’re going to have is a lot of industry professionals will be there,” General Manager Dan Mourning said. “People that can talk to you about how movies are made, what other avenues are. Also, you know, what jobs are available as well.”
“But we also have some surprises,” Mourning said. “Maybe a few celebrities might show up at some point. But we’re not going to tell you right now.”
The showcase runs from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday, with film screenings set to begin at 6 p.m.
Other weekend events
The fair also has three more Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) rodeos scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Tanya Tucker will perform after Friday night’s rodeo, and Mexican rock band The Warning will take the stage Saturday night.
State fair organizers said the second weekend usually draws bigger crowds, and they believe this year could set another attendance record.
“Incredible crowds on the first weekend, even with the heat. I mean, our numbers, even with a little bit of rain that we’ve had, are better than they were last year, so we’re excited about the final finale,” Mourning said.
Gates open at 10 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Organizers also said any city or county worker in New Mexico can get into the fair all weekend for $5.
