PIERRE, S.D. (KELO) — Feeding South Dakota’s request for a one-time lump of funding from state government has been set aside.
The Legislature’s Joint Committee on Appropriations tabled the request on Wednesday.
Feeding South Dakota seeks $5 million from Legislature
The legislation, House Bill 1147, originally asked for $5 million. Democratic Rep. Erik Muckey of Sioux Falls amended that amount down to $1.5 million.
The committee voted 10-6 to table it.
Ten people spoke in support of the bill, led by Feeding South Dakota CEO Lori Dykstra. She said the $1.5 million would offset the loss of federal funding for a program used to purchase food from local producers, while groups try to change the mind of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s current leadership.
There was one opponent. Mitch Richter, representing the South Dakota United School Association, reminded the appropriators that state law says K-12 public schools are to receive the lesser of 3% or the rate of inflation. The committee is trying to find money to fulfill that.
Richter asked whether state government should step in when the federal government cuts funding, as happened to Feeding South Dakota last year. “One-time funding often becomes a recurring expectation,” he said. “This is a precedent we should approach very cautiously.”
