CLEVELAND, Ohio — Federal prosecutors on Wednesday charged a Cleveland man hours after authorities say he shot a deputy U.S. marshal in the arm as officers tried to arrest him.
Larry Wiley, 49, is charged in federal court in Cleveland with assault on a federal officer with a deadly weapon. He is being held in the Cuyahoga County Jail and his initial court appearance is set for Thursday in front of U.S. District Magistrate Judge Jennifer Dowdell Armstrong.
Court records do not list any attorneys for Wiley.
The shooting happened about 8 a.m. at an apartment building on East 91st Street and Stewart Avenue in the city’s Glenville neighborhood.
Members of the U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force went to arrest Wiley on a warrant for a September shooting in East Cleveland that wounded two people.
Officials said Wiley shot the deputy marshal in the arm. He is expected to recover.
Officers returned fire, but did not hit Wiley, who barricaded himself inside the apartment. A standoff lasted about three hours.
A Cuyahoga County Sheriff SWAT team arrested Wiley after shooting tear gas into the home and negotiating with Wiley, who threatened to take his own life, officials said.
Cleveland police and the FBI are investigating the shooting and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are helping investigators process ballistics evidence, officials said.
The shooting marked the first time that a member of the fugitive task force had been shot. The unit was formed in 2003 and has since made more than 60,000 arrests. The task force pairs deputy marshals with local police officers to track down and arrest people charged in violent crimes.
Wiley has a long history of arrests and convictions. Officials said he spent some 20 years in prison over the course of his life, including for shootings and three convictions for assaulting police officers.
