Elevator on Everett’s Grand Avenue Park Bridge up and running again

EVERETT — The elevator on Everett’s Grand Avenue Park bridge has reopened, at least temporarily, after a months-long closure due to damage from vandalism, the city announced on Friday.
It had been closed since July 9, when someone threw a lit firework into the elevator that exploded after the doors had shut. The damage required city officials to repair the floor of the elevator and its sides; waiting for parts took months.
The bridge, which opened in 2020 and cost $20 million, is a convenient connection allowing people in north Everett to walk or roll to the Port of Everett marina, with its shops, hotels and restaurants.
But the elevator on the ADA-accessible bridge has been forced to close multiple times in the past due to damage from vandalism, once in 2020 and twice in 2024. Other than the pedestrian bridge, the closest accessible access to Marine View Drive is across 25th Street, almost a mile away.
The repairs the city made were temporary to get the elevator back in service more promptly, city spokesperson Simone Tarver wrote in an email Friday, but the elevator will need more permanent repairs, which are set to begin later this year.
Those repairs will require another closure of the elevator. It’s unclear when exactly that closure will begin and how long it will last, but city officials don’t expect it to be very long.
