Egg Harbor Twp Doctor Charged in Pill Mill Conspiracy

A doctor from Egg Harbor Township is facing charges of running an alleged pill mill conspiracy through his medical practice. Some of the patients using the drugs overdosed and died.

Dr. Joseph P. DiRenzo Jr., 64, of Egg Harbor Township, along with Dr. Marc A. Matozzo, 56, of Woodbury, and Joseph D. Norris, P.A., 62, of Philadelphia, were charged by indictment with conspiracy to unlawfully distribute controlled substances.

The charges filed in federal court this week are part of the Department of Justice’s 2026 National Health Care Fraud Takedown.

The men were also each charged with two counts of unlawful distribution of controlled substances.

Norris was also charged with one count of false statements related to health care matters.

It appears that the two doctors and the physician assistant worked together at medical practices called Philadelphia Family Medicine and NVU Facial Aesthetics and Weight Loss, which have locations in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The physicians are accused of running a voicemail refill line that enabled patients to request and receive controlled-substance prescription refills over five years, from January 2020 to March 2025.

The indictment also says that the defendants received notice from pharmacy benefit managers and insurers that the doctors had prescribed dangerous amounts of the drugs and dangerous combinations of the drugs and other medications, but they continued to prescribe these medicines.

Some patients who used the refill line overdosed and died, according to the indictment.

“Medical professionals occupy a position of trust and are sworn to care for and protect their patients,” said Wayne A. Jacobs, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Philadelphia.

“The defendants in this case allegedly violated that trust and their professional oaths by continuing to prescribe dangerous quantities of Schedule II narcotics, even after being warned about the risks posed by their prescribing practices.

A Little Background on Dr. DiRenzo

A website for NVU Facial  Aesthetics in Merchantville, NJ, says, “Dr. Joseph P. DiRenzo Jrhas been practicing both Family Medicine and Medical Weight Loss in Philadelphia and New Jersey for over 25 years.

In addition to being the medical director of NVU facial aesthetics, he is the co-founder of both Philadelphia Family Medicine and DMN Weight Loss practices.”

The Case is Part of a National Health Care Fraud Crackdown

The charges announced this week by the U.S. Attorney are part of a nationwide law enforcement action that resulted in charges against 455 defendants, including 90 doctors and other licensed medical professionals.

The defendants are being charged for their alleged participation in health care fraud and opioid abuse schemes involving over $6.5 billion in false claims and significant patient harm, including death.

Assistant Attorney General Colin M. McDonald of the Justice Department’s National Fraud Enforcement Division said the investigation was intended to show that there are consequences to medical malpractice and health care fraud.

Our message is simple: if you put profit over patients, you should expect to be put in prison.”
