ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A Dirty Bourbon security guard found two babies alone in a car and called for help, leading police to rush in and get them out.
Chris King has worked at the Dirty Bourbon for about a half a year, and said he found the children after business slowed around 1:30 a.m.
Police body camera video showed officers breaking a window and opening the back doors to free the babies from the car.
“I have mixed feelings about it, just because I wasn’t doing it to be a hero. I was more concerned about the children and their well-being, I guess,” King said.
King said his job includes watching for fights, potential drunk drivers and trouble in the parking lot, but he said something that night did not feel right.
King said he grabbed his flashlight, walked through the lot, turned a corner and shined his light through a windshield.
“I seeing little baby legs and that’s whenever I knew I was like, you gotta be kidding me, there’s really a kid in this car. And so I instantly went up to it because I didn’t know how long this kid was in there. Then I seeing there was two kids,” King said.
King said he called for backup from his partner, and the two watched the babies through the window while they waited for police to arrive.
“I got emotional. And I realized that I was doing my job, but I had to keep my calm because I have a family member who just recently had babies,” King said. “And seeing them, they’re defenseless. So I was just like, there’s no way for them to even call for help if they need help.”
King said he hopes people take a lesson from what happened.
“Just be responsible, enjoy yourself, have fun. We’re not here to be on you guys, just enjoy yourself. But don’t enjoy yourself too much to where we have to step in and you guys start bothering other people,” King said.
The two children went to the hospital, where doctors checked them and released them after an evaluation.
New information revealed in the case
This comes as new details emerged about the case in court on Wednesday.
The father of the twin babies, Stephan Natseway, is accused of giving the twin babies melatonin before leaving them in the car.
Natseway was releaed from custody on Wednesday, on the condition he cannot have contact with the children.
