Rapid City, S.D. (KELO) — Halloween is next week; however, celebrations will be kicking off around Rapid City starting this Friday.

During the holiday festivities, law enforcement is urging people to be safe and not to drink and drive.

Dating back to 2019, over 200 people have been killed in alcohol-related crashes on the night of Halloween across the nation.

“You want to make sure that you have a designated driver beforehand. A lot of people want to go out and enjoy Halloween and enjoy it with friends and go out and drink of course, but just make sure you have that designated driver or be prepared to call an Uber or call rideshare,” PCSO Deputy Jordan Decker said

Alcohol-impaired driving is dangerous and continues to be a factor in fatal traffic crashes across the United States. In South Dakota, over the past four years on Halloween night, there have been at least 26 incidents of alcohol impaired crashes across the state.

Being safe is also important for those walking the streets with their friends or family to be more aware of their surroundings.

“Some of those tips that we can give kids and parents for Halloween is make sure you’re going out with someone that you trust, an older kid or a parent that knows their way around. Reminder to the kids, be careful and don’t go into someone’s house that you do not know. Make sure you’re watching where you’re crossing the street,” Decker said.

Law enforcement wants those who are planning on going out and drinking to make plans ahead of time and not at the last minute when your judgment is impaired.
