Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya exits game vs. Reds with strained left oblique

CINCINNATI – Cubs catcher Miguel Amaya left the game Saturday against the Reds in the fifth inning with a strained left oblique, according to the team.

With no outs in the inning, speedy Reds star Elly De La Cruz took off from first base in a 1-1 count to Austin Hays.

Hays turned away from the high and inside fastball, and Amaya made the throw down to second around him. De La Cruz slid in safely on the steal.

Head athletic trainer Nick Frangella jogged out to examine Amaya after the play. Amaya extended both hands over his head. He mimed the start of a throwing motion. Then he exited the field.

Carson Kelly replaced Amaya behind the plate.

Amaya, in his third major-league season has been on pace for a career year. He’s hitting .280 with an .818 OPS.
