A Putnam man is facing DUI charges after allegedly refusing to submit to field sobriety testing and resisting arrest following a rollover crash on Interstate 395 in Thompson Wednesday night.
Troopers from Troop D in Danielson were dispatched to I-395 north in the area of Exit 50 just before 9 p.m. on Wednesday for a reported motor vehicle crash involving a rollover with entrapment, according to the Connecticut State Police.
While troopers were responding, they were advised that the driver and passenger were out of the vehicle and both were conscious and alert, state police said. The troopers were also advised that the driver was allegedly agitated and becoming hostile with EMS personnel at the scene, according to state police.
Arriving troopers learned the driver was not injured and was refusing medical treatment, state police said. The passenger sustained minor injuries and was later transported to an area hospital.
A preliminary investigation determined that the vehicle was traveling south on I-395 when it veered left off the roadway to the left, went over the embankment, rolled over the guardrail along the left shoulder of I-395 north and came to rest on its roof in the left lane of I-395 North, according to state police.
Troopers spoke with the driver, who was identified as 22-year-old Dylan McCaughey of Putnam. While speaking with McCaughey, troopers allegedly observed signs of impairment, state police said. Troopers also spoke with the passenger who alleged that McCaughey was traveling over 100 mph before losing control of the vehicle, according to state police.
McCaughey was asked to submit to standardized field sobriety testing, which he allegedly refused, state police said.
According to state police, the investigating trooper attempted to arrest McCaughey, at which point he allegedly pulled away from the trooper who was attempting to handcuff him. Another trooper assisted and both took hold of his arms to secure him in handcuffs.
McCaughey was transported to Troop D, where he was processed on charges of reckless driving, illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs, failure to maintain proper lane on a limited access highway and interfering with an officer/resisting. He was later released on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at Danielson Superior Court on Oct. 15.
State police said I-395 north was shut down during the investigation.
