RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Keith Majeroni is the Director of Facilities and Operations at Cross Assembly Church in Raleigh. He says initial images from western North Carolina hit the hearts of their congregation.
“Almost immediately, the lord just said to us we needed to go help,” Majeroni said.
Majeroni shared the inspiring story of the first team of nearly 20 selfless volunteers from Cross Assembly Church in Raleigh who left for western North Carolina just days after the storm.
“They took everything they needed, ready to camp and live on the supplies we had, food and water we needed,” he said.
They ultimately adopted Crossroads Church of Asheville. “They helped clean out the debris in the church, rip up carpet,” said Crossroads Church of Asheville Pastor Mike Brown.
Brown says floodwaters and debris surrounded their church in Asheville. “There was concern this church could not survive,” said Majeroni.

But they were determined not to give up. “People just gave, they came and served, and we had to take our storage area and move stuff out to receive all the goods that were being donated,” said Cross Assembly Finance and Administration Pastor Mark Jones.
Jones said his congregation has made numerous trips this past year, helping Pastor Mike’s church rebuild, among other things.
“We fed the community, we had hot meals for the community, and we were able to distribute food to the area,” said Pastor Brown.
Cross Assembly in Raleigh has made a long-term commitment, donating over $100,000 in financial support, as well as supplies and manpower.
“It’s not all fixed in one year, it’s a longer term because there were bridges out, roads out, houses destroyed, businesses gone,” said Jones.
And it’s a catastrophic event that has changed both congregations. “It helped me to refocus and really get a fresh perspective on caring for people,” said Pastor Brown.
“I was able to put myself aside and really be the hands and feet of Jesus and show his love to a community that was desperately in need of that,” said Majeroni.
Cross Assembly’s work continues in Western North Carolina. The church will be teaming up with a nonprofit, Convey of Hope, to help repair and build new homes for people in temporary housing.
