RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Crews on Saturday afternoon responded to a water rescue call in the Neuse River in an area where there were at least four drownings last spring and summer.

The call was reported around 4:25 p.m. at Raleigh Beach along the Neuse River, according to Wake County authorities.

The Knightdale Fire Department along with Raleigh Fire Department crews were dispatched to the area, which has signs warning people about swimming.

Wake County authorities said at least two boats were in the water by 4:45 p.m. The Raleigh Beach area is near the Neuse River Greenway Trail bridge and just north of the bridge for U.S. 64 Business.

“We are responding to assist with a report of a water rescue on the Neuse River near Raleigh Beach Road,” Wake County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Rosalia Fodera told CBS 17 in a statement.

By 5:30 p.m., crime scene tape was up on a trail leading to the river and beach area.
