RAWL, WV (WOWK) — A single-vehicle crash that happened between Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning claimed the lives of a young mother and her son in Rawl.
Mingo County Sheriff’s Chief Field Deputy Allen Mounts said the crash happened between 8 p.m. Tuesday night and 9 a.m. Wednesday morning. A Norfolk Southern Railroad detective found the car, which had crashed on State Route 49 and rolled over a 75-foot hillside onto nearby railroad tracks.
“We aren’t sure if the rain Tuesday night had anything to do with it,” Mounts told 13 News. “They were traveling toward Williamson between Rawl and Lick Creek. Her vehicle left the road and crossed the southbound lane and went over the hill. The car came to rest on the tracks there.”
Chief Deputy Mounts said 24-year-old Keyonna Norman was ejected from her car after it left the roadway. He said Norman’s 9-year-old son, Kingston, was still in the car, but both occupants were not wearing their seatbelts.
Mounts said Norman and her son were both found dead when the railroad detective arrived on scene Wednesday morning.
The chief deputy said the crash is still under investigation, and that they have not been able to determine what caused Norman’s car to leave the roadway.
