The news conference was organized by labor leaders and featured speakers from all walks of life.
MOORHEAD, MN (KVRR) – The federal government shutdown continues to stretch on, and community members and legislators are speaking out regarding its negative impacts.
Labor union leaders organized a press conference, held at the Hjemkomst Center in Moorhead on Wednesday afternoon.
Many people spoke, from a librarian in Climax, Minnesota who volunteers at her local food pantry to a representative for federal workers who are currently not getting paid for their work.
State Representative Heather Keeler and Senator Rob Kupec were also in attendance, and Kupec said the variety of speakers represented the seriousness of the present situation.
“I think it speaks to the broadness of these impacts,” said Kupec. “This isn’t just about SNAP, this isn’t just about health benefits. It’s the whole spectrum of our society that is being impacted by this.”
Representative Keeler urged her constituents to donate as much as possible to local food banks and to contact legislators in Washington to urge them to re-open the government.
