INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The injuries keep piling up for the Indianapolis Colts — especially on the defensive side of the ball.
Colts edge rusher Samson Ebukam is expected to miss “multiple weeks” with an MCL injury, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Ebukam left Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers in the third quarter after he collided with teammate DeForest Buckner in pursuit of Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert. Buckner fell into Ebukam’s right leg. Ebukam then limped off the field after being attended to by the Colts training staff.
According to Fowler, Ebukam is seeking a secondary opinion on the injury.
So far, the 6-foot-3, 245-pound defensive end has two sacks this season. His career with the Colts has been one of extreme highs and lows. His first season with the Horseshoe, Ebukam led the team in sacks, showing what a monstrous force he can be off the edge. The following year, Ebukam tore his Achilles tendon during training camp, which cost him his entire 2024 season.
Under new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, Ebukam had a more limited role than the one he had in 2023 with Gus Bradley but was still making an impact when on the field.
The Colts defense is currently ranked seventh in the NFL at getting to the quarterback. Indy averages 2.7 sacks per game with a 6.46 sack percentage (which is 19th in the league).
Ebukam’s injury comes as the Colts continue to band aid a defense together each week. Cornerback Charvarius Ward is on injured reserve after sustaining a concussion during pregame warm-ups before the Arizona Cardinals game. He’s the most recent defensive playmaker placed on IR. In total, seven players on the Colts defense are lists on IR. Ward joins Justin Walley, Daniel Scott, Hunter Wohler and Jaylon Jones as the defensive backs on IR, while linebackers Jaylon Carlies and Jacob Phillips are also on the list.
Even with all the injuries, the Colts are still in the top 10 in regards to fewest points allowed, giving just 20 to opponents through seven games.
Through mid-October, the Colts remain the best team in the AFC with a 6-1 record. Next up, the Horseshoe hosts the Tennessee Titans at Lucas Oil Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:25 p.m. Eastern Sunday.
